The Classical Tuina Herbal Preparations
Classical preparations can be applied to the points or areas with appropriate techniques. These substances are used to reduce friction, protect the skin, and improve the therapeutic effects of massage through their pharmacological actions. Herbal preparations are selected according to the conditions of disease. For instance, in treating an external syndrome, sudorific substances may be useful; in treating blood stasis a herbal preparation which activates the blood flow, may be useful
When treating cold syndromes, herbal preparation of a hot nature may be useful. Also in treating heat syndromes, preparations of a cold nature might be desired, etc. This type of medicine follows a logical method.
The appropriateness of each preparation and its other characteristics, such as dryness, dampness, concentration, and lubricant, must also be considered.
Usually, after Tuina massage, there is no need to wash these preparations away immediately because they remain effective for up to two hours. According to the forms of dosage, they may be classified as preparations made with juice, water, alcohol, vinegar, oil, honey, powder; Egypt as a decoction, medicated plaster, pill, etc.
These tend to be undiluted juices obtained from fresh, uncooked substances. They may be changed into water preparations by adding a small amount of distilled water.
Obtain milk from a healthy woman, although fresh cow's milk may be used as a substitute, those with allergies may not tolerate this well. The properties are sweet, salty and placid. It is useful to invigorate the weakened person, benefit vital energy, clear heat, moisten dryness, supplement the Five Yin Organs, improve the functions of the gastrointestinal tract, nourish blood, etc.
In ancient cultures it was commonly used in treating the diseases of children. To treat conjunctivitis, lachrymal excess, and tics caused by wind invasion. Generally apply to Yintang which is the area between the eyes. When applied to the upper abdomen, the navel or lower abdomen, it is useful in treating weak flatulence, infantile malnutrition, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and enuresis in children. When applied locally to the skin, it may relieve the pain and itching caused by chapping or dryness. As medium massage, human milk can invigorate the weakened constitution and clear heat from the blood.
Firstly break the eggs and separate out the whites. The properties are sweet, salty, and placid. It may be used to strengthen Spleen-Stomach, moisten the skin, reduce swelling, and treat pain. It is useful for toothache, gingivitis, parotitis, scrofula, sore throat and other such substances when applied to knees and the sides of the neck. The use of cactus pulp in conjuction with the egg white will improve the results. You may apply to the chest or abdomen to treat cough and fever in children, infantile malnutrition, etc. In local application, it is useful against pain and dry itch of poxes and pus producing skin infections.
Swine bile (no longer in use)
Fresh pig bile was used as it was the best way of utilizing the energies of this substance. The dried preparation, ground in water, may be used as a substitute, as may chicken bile, which is also effective and still used in certain area of China. It has the properties of bitterness and cold. It may be used to clear heat, relax the bowels, reduce swelling, and eliminate stagnation. When applied to Shenque, it may alleviate constipation, abdominal distension and jaundice. It is also effective against dizziness, hypertension, etc., when applied to Yongquan with rubbing and kneading action
Lotus (Nelumbo, nucifera, Lian Fang)
Select thick and tender specimens and wring them out to extract the juice. Properties are of which are sweet and cold. This may be used to clear heat, promote production of body fluids, cool blood and resolve stasis. The juice is slippery and greasy and often used to treat children for such aliments as dryness and itching of the skin, poxes and infections which produce pus.
Dandelion (Taraxacum mongolicum, Pu Gong Ying)
Wash a bunch of the whole herb and crush it for the juice extract. Its properties are sweet, bitter and cold. It can clear heat, detoxify evils, reduce swelling, and eliminate stagnations. When applied to the neck and nape, it is useful against scrofula, carbuncles, and cellulitis. When applied to the chest and breast, it may prevent and treat the swelling and pain of acute mastitis. When applied locally, it treats skin infections which produce pus.
Snakegourd (Trichosanthes kirilowoo, Gua Lou)
Peel the skin of the fresh fruit, discard the seeds, and crush the fruit for its juice. Its properties are sweet and cold. It can moisten the lung, large intestine and skin, resolve phlegm, and eliminate stagnation. When applied to Huagai, Tanzhong and Rugen, it can treat cough due to Phlegm-Heat, choking pain and stiffness in the chest, and swollen breasts. In local application, it is effective for chapped hands and feet, and can alleviate the pain from boils.
Lotus Leaf (Nelumbo nucifera, He Ye)
Pound the lotus to crush out the juice. Properties are bitter, astringent and placid. It can raise and disperse clear yang, clear away Summer- Heat, resolve stasis and stop bleeding. It is most commonly applied to the abdomen and the back. It is used in treating rubella, pox, purpura, etc.
Water Chestnut (Eleocharis tuberosa, Bi Qi)
Wash and clean the chestnuts, then break them into pieces and wring the juice out. The properties are sweet and slightly cold. This can help to clear heat, improve eyesight, eliminate stasis, and resolve phlegm. The juice is slippery and greasy and is often used in massage of children. Fever due to deficiency of spleen, mass in the abdomen, jaundice and other childhood diseases may be treated by applying this juice to forearms and abdomen coupled with point massage.
Patchouli (Agastache rugosa, Huo Xiang)
Pound the leaves and stalks to squeeze out the juice. Properties are pungent and slightly warm. It helps clear summer-heat resolve dampness, rectify vital energy, and harmonize the middle warmer. When applied to Yintang, Shenting, Taiyang, Fengfu, and Fengshi it helps treat headache due to sunstroke and dizziness due to adhesion of dampness. Nausea, vomiting, feelings of fullness and heaviness in the chest may be valued by rubbing and kneading it into the upper abdomen. Applied locally, it may stop itching caused by mosquito bites or rubella.
Peppermint (Mentha haplocalyx, Bo He)
Pound the leaves and stalks to extract the juice. Its properties are pungent and cool. It may disperse wind, clear heat, relieve depressed energy, and expel pathogenic factors from the External. When applied to the forehead at Taiyang, Yingxiang, Jiache and Tiantu, it may treat an attack of Wind-Heat, headache, stuffy nose, sore throat and toothache due to Wind-Fire, etc.
Garlic (Allium sativum, Da Suan)
Peel the skin from the garlic cloves and pound them to extract their juice. The properties of garlic juice are pungent and warm. It may detoxify bacteria, warm the middle warmer and invigorate the stomach. When applied to Tanzhong and Feishu, it is useful for the common colds and convulsive coughing. It may also be used to reduce swelling and stop itching when rubbed and kneaded locally on tinea or rash.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale, Sheng Jiang)
Pound the ginger into a pulp to obtain the juice. Its properties are pungent and slightly warm. It may relieve the external, disperse cold, warm the middle warmer, and stop vomiting. It is useful in treating the common cold, stiff neck, headache, dyspnoea, and cough due to retention of phlegm and fluids when applied to the neck and nape, and points such as Fengchi, Diazhui, Fengmen and others. Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal distension may be treated by application to Jiuweo, Shangwan, Zhongwan, and Xiawan, among others.
Scallion (Allium fistulosum, Cong Bai)
After washing Chinese scallions stalks, crush them to obtain the juice or essence. The properties are pungent and warm. It may induce perspiration, communicate Yang, and promote normal urination. Grasping and kneading Fengchi, Dazhui and the nose with scallion juice on the fingers help treat the common cold, headache, stuffy nose, etc. Applying scallion juice to Shenque and the lower abdomen may relieve abdominal pain, dysuria and other symptoms. Thick scallion juice is suitable for adults. Slightly diluted scallion juice is more suitable for children
